Replace That Ugly Flush Mount Dome Light

Even without looking at the photo, you probably knew exactly what a flush-mount dome light looked like. This light is basically the bare-bones construction method of a builder-grade light. It serves as an inexpensive construction solution, because you don't need to worry about hanging chandeliers or how low the lights will dangle in the room.

Not only are these lights an eyesore, but they tend to give off an unflattering light. They also usually produce unpleasant shadows or glares.

If you're one of the many homeowners who have these lights mounted on your ceiling, rest assured that you don't have to live with them forever. They're simple enough to replace and won't break the bank.

Consider the height of the replacement light. If you have a tall ceiling height, select a semi-flush option that lets the fixture hang a few inches down from the ceiling. It's best to keep a 7-foot clearance from the bottom of the fixture to the floor.

Stick with one style.
When you swap out light fixtures, you might be tempted to go wild and choose all new fixtures without determining your style. Keep your lighting plan consistent, and have a cohesive lighting scheme. Remember that style is more important than the finish.
Choose the right size. Consider room size when swapping out the old light. For a larger room, go for a flush mount that is between 18 to 22 inches. It will fill the space without looking too small. For a typical-sized bedroom, choose one that is between 13 to 15 inches.

Once you have a good idea about the style and size of your new lighting fixture, check out lighting fixtures at a local home improvement store or go online. You'll be amazed at the wide variety of lights available, and you'll no longer have an ugly light hanging from your ceiling.
